Beaverton Fairground

The proposed development in the Beaverton Fairground is emerging as a major topic of discussion in the current election campaign. People want to know where candidates stand. In response to queries about my position, because the project proposal seemed hypothetical at best, two thoughts framed my response.

First, I expressed the belief that Brock desperately needs development, both commercial and residential. Accordingly, I take no issue with the Council exploring any and all development proposals.

Second, it is my view that the fairground is a public asset. Any development proposal that could enhance the financial and recreational well being of the entire community without diminishing the lifestyle and property values of those adjacent to this parkland should be considered.

However, I have come to realize that this matter is not entirely hypothetical. There is a very real, albeit initial proposal on the table. Minutes of the Brock Township Planning Committee of December 13, 2012 (https://oyez.lexum.com/site/en/1707/p/5942/index.do) outline a project tabled by King Square Limited to construct eight (8), eight (8) storey buildings containing 480 condominium units on the fairground property. As proposed all parking to support the 2000 residents would be on above ground paved surface. The developer requests that Council defer development charges and assist in the acquisition of a corridor to the lake.

I oppose this proposal tabled before the Planning Committee. Aside from questions about the necessary infrastructure to support such a development, it violates everything that I believe the residents of Brock value – green space, our agricultural heritage and physical wellness! To this proposal, very simply, I say - NO!
